2nd Line Systems Engineer

Our client is an an IT services company based in Portsmouth.

They currently have an opportunity for a 2nd Line Systems Engineer to shoulder the responsibility for escalated technical issues from other lines of support

There are two key areas to the role: The personal skill requirements as well as the level of technical ability.

Personal skills
Taylorcocks IT operates to a level of service which should be adhered to at all times when dealing with both clients and colleagues.

They have a relatively small team working in close-quarters so being a good team player is essential.

Punctuality is also very important as is a strong command of the English language both verbally and in writing.

Such is the nature of IT support/project work that the flexibility to undertake occasional out of hours work is also necessary.

You will have good judgement of situations regarding communication and SLAs with clients, as well as demonstrate appropriate decision-making regarding their IT infrastructure.

This will include pro-actively advising clients on the development of their systems.

The role will require you to handle technical issues to completion, unless there is agreement for it to be escalated to the next level of support.

It also requires a willingness to liaise with all levels of clients’ staff and to take ownership of cases regardless of their technical level.

Likewise you will act as a consultant and be able to appropriately handle queries from less senior colleagues.

Technical requirements
You will be capable of managing a client’s server and network environment, for example:

  • Microsoft Windows Server (including Exchange, SQL, IIS)
  • Veeam and VMware.}
  • SAN/NAS and other storage technologies.
  • LAN/WAN technologies.
  • Active Directory/Group Policy management.
  • Software and hardware troubleshooting.
  • Network security.
  • VoIP systems
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Router/switch configuration

A positive and pro-active “can-do” attitude to problem solving as well as training and learning is essential in order to help drive both yourself and the business forward.

The Employee’s duties include (but are not limited to):

  • General IT support duties for both the Company and clients of the Company.
  • The professional operation of the company’s IT support helpdesk function.

    To include answering the telephone, responding to emails and providing immediate assistance to clients.
  • To log and prioritise support cases where appropriate.
  • To create and maintain technical documentation for all client systems.
  • To provide assistance to clients of the Company which may include travelling to client premises where required.
  • To assist and perform installation and recovery procedures.
  • To represent the Company in a professional manner at all times; providing a high level of customer service and communication to clients.
  • On call duties.
