Research & Development Manager

Mark Roberts Motion Control is looking for a Research & Development Manager. This role is more about project management and ensuring the successful completion of all projects on time and budget.

The R&D Manager will be expected to look after anywhere between 15 and 20 projects at once, with a mixture of bespoke client led products and core product development.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:


  • Manage design and project engineers, in the fields of electronics, mechanics and software
  • Assume product design responsibilities and lead a cross-functional team through all stages of product development
  • Solicit and apply inputs from broadcast/film/robotics thought leaders, marketing, sales, and other engineers to define product specifications
  • Understand complex mechanical, electronic and software systems
  • Develop solutions to design problems through the application of engineering principles, analysis, and empirical methods
  • Proactively anticipate technical issues and with input from the project team, create and execute project plans to meet team objectives
  • Design prototypes for proof of concept
  • Develop methods and protocols for product verification and validation testing
  • Enhance the intellectual property position of the company via invention disclosures and patent applications
  • Manage departmental expenditure and personnel resources
  • Balance flow of resources among projects & maintain project priorities
  • Help sales of custom solutions by providing sales with feedback as to what is and isn’t possible and where needed rough system sketches or budgets
  • Ensure projects are executed properly & achieve market success

Key Skills & Experience:


  • Degree educated in relevant Engineering disciplines or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years leading a development team
  • Strong understanding and experience of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) or practical skills in simplifying product designs to reduce costs of components, manufacturing or assembly
  • Solid understanding of product engineering and CAD design and analysis tools such as Solid Works (though no requirement to be able to use them)
  • Ability to create project budgets, or to take costs into consideration during the design stage
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes in low-medium quantity applications with emphasis on innovative approaches to improve quality, assembly, and efficiency
  • Experienced in Project Management 
  • Proven ability to lead small teams to meet desired results, and a team player

  • Strong team and department leadership skills and ability to influence others is a must 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Looking to work in an extremely dynamic and fast-paced environment, and you are prepared to meet aggressive development milestones, and create products that truly delight the customer

About the Company

MARK ROBERTS MOTION CONTROL is a robotics company doing some serious hardware and software engineering, based in Surrey.

By robots we mean 6+ axis robotic arms, large multi axis rigs and 2-3 Axis camera platforms.  Our products are used globally in Broadcast studios, Stadiums, Movie Sets and Photography studios to capture motion and stills. 

We are everywhere! In the Fox news room in America, Game of Thrones shoots in Ireland, Olympics in areas that can only be accessed by robots on location and photographing products and models at 2000 frames per second!

MRMC has been at the front of its field for over 50 years.
