Innovation Lead
Contract: Freelance
Duration: 6 months (with possibility of extension) Full Time
Contract Fee: £25,000
Location: West Midlands

The UK stands at a pivotal point in history.

2020 marks the year it will start to re-establish its place in the world, on new terms whilst facing a rapidly changing technological landscape.

As a nation, the UK has long been regarded as a world-class centre for creativity and innovation with creative content driving its global brand.

The West Midlands is well placed to position its creative content cluster to now sit at the heart of the UK's future media industry.

The region is already a proving ground for new kinds of digital infrastructure, with a £150m large-scale WM5G Testbed now underpinning this evolution.

Integral to the region's future in creative content is the region's strength in digital technology.

The 2017 WM Science and Innovation Audit found that tech and digital was the fifth largest sector in the WMCA economy with nearly 14,000 tech and digital businesses in 2016, 5% of the national total and more than any other combined authority area in the country.

Partners across all sectors and industries have acknowledged the importance of embedding new and future practices and technology into the economy.

As one of the region's four identified major market opportunities (MMO), ‘Creative Content, Techniques and Technologies' will now be embedded into the people, businesses and the places of the region through a series of significant interventions.

This will result in an investment framework for programmes enabling creativity to be recognised, developed and embedded, not just in the creative sector, but in all sectors of the economy.

However, the region needs to make rapid and ambitious progress to establish a firm economic base for growth in the highly competitive creative content markets.

A diverse, sustainable and competitive sector needs to offer job prospects and career development today if it wants to create an exciting and innovative sector for the next generation.

It needs also to offer the capacity to test and trial new ideas and platforms to incubate, accelerate and grow disruptive players in the market.

The Innovation Lead will work with partners to, oversee and implement an innovation strategy for the screen sector and wider creative industries to support the delivery of the WM Creative Content Growth Plan 2020-2022 and the West Midlands Innovation Programme (WMIP).
