Technical Sales Manager

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Technical Sales Manager to join a growing, successful and innovative company based in East Sussex.

About our Client

Our client is a specialist manufacturer and global supplier of vacuum based tubes and camera systems for photon detection.

They are experts in large area and ultra-high-speed imaging and advanced photon counting camera systems for scientific research, industrial control and military applications.

About the Role

This is a key role within the company, and you will have responsibility for co-ordinating and driving their sales activities, including both domestic (direct) and international sales (via distributors).

Due to the international nature of company’s products and markets, some experience of export regulations is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.

The role provides a high degree of technical support and applicants must possess a dynamic and application driven approach to the sales process, supported by a relevant technical degree.

Suitable application backgrounds could include High Energy Physics, Microscopy, Space Science, Mass Spectrometry.

Co-ordination with internal sales support staff will be required. 

30% travel is expected (Subject to latest COVID guidelines).

Main Duties include:

  • Maintain and develop product sales both direct to customers and through distributors
  • Work with customers and internally within the company to finalise customer specifications
  • Respond in a timely and professional manner to customer and distributor enquiries
  • Generate and follow-up sales leads from trade shows and other marketing activities
  • Attend suitable exhibitions and conferences 
  • Participate in proposal writing
  • Be aware of potential export requirements and contribute as required for export license applications
  • Work effectively with internal sales support functions as well as other internal company’s functions (Operations, QA, Finance and R&D etc)
  • Contribute to the preparation of specific marketing materials as required (experience of MS Publisher an advantage)
  • Populate and utilise appropriate company’s CRM systems
  • Attend and present activities in management meetings
  • Contribute as required (working with R&D) to the development of relevant new products
  • Travel as required in the UK, Europe and Asia to attend meetings and demonstrations
  • The role may include other reasonable duties/tasks from time to time

Skills and knowledge:


  • Use of office systems and administration including Microsoft Office/Publisher 
  • Sales of technical equipment to research institutes
  • Distributor Channel Management & Development
  • A proven record as a team player who has the ability and confidence to work on own initiative and independently when needed
  • Experience in a relevant application- for example: photonics technology, vacuum systems, mass spectrometry, space science, microscopy
  • Understanding of photon detection and applications
  • Development of sales and marketing plans
  • Read and interpret specification & technical documents
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Data Analysis and presentation
  • Strong IT skills and use of Microsoft Office
  • Strong problem-solving skills 
  • Excellent personal organisation 
  • Dynamic, positive, enthusiastic and possess the ability to think laterally and act through reasoned decision making
  • Ability to work productively, efficiently and effectively with initiative and drive under tight timescales and pressure whilst maintaining attention to detail and quality
  • Willingness to learn, improve and adapt

Qualifications required:

  • Educated to degree Level in Biosciences, Physics, Engineering or other relevant technical discipline (or equivalent industrial experience/certification)
